Creating a project

A new project can be created from two places within the toolkit.

  • From Header - Hover the cursor over the "Projects" link in the header and select the "Create a new project" link.

  • From My Projects - Select the "Create a new project" button from the my projects area.

Once in the "Create new project" modal, there are four ways to create a new project.

  • Creating a basic project
  • Creating a project from template
  • Creating a project using a sample project from industry
  • Creating a new project based on an existing project
  • Creating a project from exported DPOW file

Creating a basic project

To create a new basic project click the "Create new project" button. A modal will pop up prompting you to enter a unique reference and a title for your project. You can also add a description about your project at this stage. Once you have done this, click the "Create now" button. Basic projects will use the default set of tasks based on the RIBA Plan of Work template.

A unique reference can be a mix of letters, numbers or valid symbols up to 10 characters long.

Creating a project from template

In the toolkit we have a number of pre-defined project templates to help you get started. Each template includes a number of pre defined tasks and roles set out against each stage, these may be amended once your project is set up. The choices of templates include:

  • Based on RIBA Plan of Work
  • Based on CIC terminology for roles
  • Suitable for geographical infrastructure
  • Suitable for linear infrastructure

To create a project from a template, click the "Create new project" button. Complete the reference, project title and description on the first step of the modal. Once complete, select the "Use template..." button.

On the second step of the 'Create a new project' modal, select the "Use a pre-defined template" radio button. From the drop-down list choose the template you would like to base your new project on.

Finally, select the "Create now" button to create your project.

Creating a project using an industry sample

We have introduced a number of sample projects to help you get started. These have been developed with industry representatives including Manchester City Council, BIM4Retail and others to cover a range of sector specific project types. They include indicative tasks, roles and deliverables for each stage to be amended to suit your project. Samples include:

  • School
  • With others being explored including retail, office, housing, landscape

To create a project from a template, click the "Create new project" button. Complete the reference, project title and description on the first step of the modal. Once complete, select the "Use template..." button.

Creating a project based on an existing project

To create a project from an existing project click the "Create new project" button. Complete the first step of the modal entering a reference, project name and description, then select the "Use template..." button.

Click the "Use existing or import project template" radio button and pick a project from the drop-down list.

Finally, select the "Create now" button to create your project.

Creating a project from a exported DPOW file

If you have a dpow file that you’d like to create a project from, you can do this via the 'Create a new project' wizard. From the header, select the 'Create a new project' link. In the create project modal, you are required to enter a unique reference and project name, as well as a project description if you wish. Once these details have been entered, select the "Use template..." button on the left.

On the next step of the modal, select the "Use existing or import project template" radio button. Now available, select the "..." button beside the dropdown. This now allows you to navigate to the location where you have stored the dpow file ready for import.

Highlight the dpow file from the browse dialog and select the 'Open' button to begin the import.
